5 signs your switchboard is overdue for an upgrade

Your switchboard is the heart of your home’s electrical system, and most people never think about it until something trips, sparks, or stops working. Here are the signs yours is due for a proper look.

1. It still has ceramic fuses

If your board has the old white ceramic fuses, the kind you pull out and rewire with fuse wire when something blows, it is dated. Modern boards use circuit breakers that simply switch back on. Ceramic fuses are slower to react and a clear sign the whole board belongs to another era of wiring.

2. There is no safety switch

A safety switch, also called an RCD, cuts the power in a fraction of a second when it detects electricity going where it should not, like through a person. Plenty of older Bundaberg homes have none at all, or one covering only part of the house. Every circuit should be protected. If yours are not, that is the first thing to fix.

3. Breakers trip all the time

The odd trip is normal. Constant tripping usually means the board cannot keep up with how a modern home uses power. Air conditioning, induction cooktops, pool pumps and EV charging all draw hard, and an older board was never built for that kind of load.

4. It runs hot, buzzes, or looks scorched

A switchboard should be quiet and cool. Heat, a buzzing sound, brown scorch marks or a burning smell point to loose connections or an overloaded board. That is a genuine fire risk, not a someday job. If you see or smell any of that, call an electrician now.

5. You are adding solar, air con, or an EV charger

Big new loads often need the board assessed, and sometimes upgraded, before anything gets installed. A good electrician checks this first. If someone wants to bolt a charger or a solar inverter onto a tired old board without looking at it properly, treat that as a red flag.

The honest bit. A switchboard upgrade is not the most exciting thing to spend money on, but it is the one that quietly keeps your house safe. If yours ticks two or more of these, get it looked at.
